The Straits Times – Heat and drought have reduced water levels on Germany’s major rivers, hampering transportation and operations for steelmakers, car factories, chemical plants, and major ports, further straining the economy.
The river handles around 80 per cent of Germany’s inland waterway traffic, and shallow river levels are limiting cargo loads, driving up shipping costs and increasing pressure on the government to respond.
